Nico van den Berg

Project Lead

Professor Nico van den Berg leads the BioMotive project, which brings together MRI technology and biomechanics to study the human body during natural movement. As a professor at UMC Utrecht, he contributes expertise in MRI physics, hardware engineering and imaging methods to the development of this new research infrastructure.

Nico studied Applied Physics at the University of Twente and began his PhD at UMC Utrecht in 2002. His research connects fundamental physical modelling with practical innovations in MRI, drawing on mathematics, computing and deep learning.

Within BioMotive, his ambition is to extend MRI beyond conventional examinations performed while lying still, enabling researchers to investigate how posture and movement influence the internal functioning of the body.
